Late-night snacks help pack on kilos

Snacks are liked by everyone, but at midnight raids on the refrigerator may have worse consequences than indigestion and a study in mice boosts the theory that when you eat affects whether the calories go to your hips or get burned off. Mice fed during the daytime when they normally would be sleeping gained more weight than mice fed at night, Fred Turek of North western University in Illinois and colleagues found. They ended up weighing 7.8% more than night-fed mice. This held even though the mice were fed identical amounts of food and exercised the same amount they said in the study.

Prime time on internet is at 11pm

It’s 11pm. Do you know where your neighbors are? Chances are they’re online. According to a study taken by the researchers, North Americans have been staying up late to do their internet surfing this summer, so late that the peak usage for the whole day has been at 11pm. The study by internet security firm Arbor Networks found people using the internet at work and school produce a smaller traffic peak around 4pm Eastern time. Internet activity then declines as people head home. At 8pm Eastern, US and Canadian home traffic starts spiking, and stays surprisingly strong past midnight, Arbor found.

World's oldest dog dies at 21in NY

A wire-haired dachshund that held the record as the world’s oldest dog and celebrated its last birthday with a party at a dog hotel and spa has died at age 21 or 147 in dog years. The dog, named Chanel, died on Friday of natural causes at her owner’s home in suburban Port Jefferson Station, on Long Island. Chanel, as stylish as her legendary namesake, wore tinted goggles for her cataracts in her later years and favoured sweaters because she was sensitive to the cold, owners Denice and Karl Shaughnessy said on Monday. The playful dachshund was only 6-weeks-old when Denice Shaughnessy, then serving with the US Army, adopted her from a shelter in Newport New, Va.
